IBM CEO Arvind Krishna Warns Remote Workers: Your Career May Suffer

Bloomberg reported that he mentioned the absence of learning experiences typically gained through in-person interactions, such as handling challenging clients. Since assuming the role of CEO in 2020, Krishna has encouraged IBM employees to return to the office for at least three days a week. The company’s HR chief, Nickle LaMoreaux, stated in 2021 that most employees would adopt a part-time office presence after the pandemic. IBM’s workforce primarily consists of employees who are co-located near offices or clients, fostering in-person collaboration as a common practice.

Krishna’s recent remarks follow IBM’s announcement regarding a slowdown or suspension of hiring for back-office positions that could be automated with artificial intelligence (AI). While IBM clarified that there was no blanket hiring pause, the company emphasized a deliberate and thoughtful approach to its hiring practices in light of technological advancements.
